Literature in the english class

Although forgotten for some time, literature has nowadays the importance it deserves within English as a Second Language teaching. Literary texts can be studied in their original forms or in simplified or abridged versions, as an increasing number of stories in English are written specifically for learners of other languages. Teachers usually tend to select specific texts especially designed for primary students, leaving classics aside as they are considered complex and boring for children. Nevertheless, the appearance of adapted and graded texts contribute to the accessibility of these books and we, as teachers of English, should take advantage of it, helping students to get familiarised with the literature of those countries in which English is spoken.

The types of literary texts that can be studied inside and outside the English Language Teaching classroom include: short stories, poems, novels, plays and song lyrics.

This way, it would be difficult to select any specific literary period, author or even genre as the most suitable to be taught in the English class.

For that reason, in our following post we will be talking about historical background dealing with British, American literature and influential authors from Europe and we will present, at the same time, the authors and titles that could be accessible for our lessons, enlarging, thus, our students' knowledge.
