Why should we use literature in our class?

To end with why should we use literature in our English class, we are going to make a brief conclusion about what we have been learning this weeks.

Teaching English as a foreign languages does not simply consist of instructing our students in the development of linguistic aspects, but deals with having communicative competent students.

In order to do so, apart from teaching grammar and vocabulary, as teachers of English at primary level we must train pupils to get some basic socio-cultural knowledge in order to be able to accomplish real and effective communication; and for this purpose, literature is a very useful tool if we know how to introduce it attractively to our students.

Using literacy materials in the English class contributes to students’ general knowledge as well as to their linguistic, cognitive, social and cultural development. Moreover, vocabulary and new structures are acquired without conscious knowledge and concepts are reinforced by their discovery in different contexts, throughout the use of adapted and authentic materials. Children’s literature can be an enjoyable way to teach and learn a language.
