We will now discuss how we can help students to develop cultural awareness in the foreign language class.
It is clear that the development of cultural awareness, though beginning in the classrooms is a far-reaching process. To facilitate it we should give our pupils regular opportunities to:
- Come into contact with native speakers.
- Work with authentic materials from the countries of the target language.
- Consider and discuss the similarities and differences between their culture and English-speaking countries cultures (such as British or American culture).
- Identify with the experiences and perspectives of English natives.
- Learn the appropriate social conventions.
- Work cultural problem solving that develops “cultural strategic competence”.
- Familiarise themselves with various forms of non-verbal communication, such as gesture and facial expressions, typical in the target culture to avoid miscommunication and erroneous.
